Members of our Smith County Amateur Radio Club and the Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) volunteered to assist in communications and safety check in for the Run4 Don event in Gainsboro and traffic and communication support for the William Walton Days in Carthage TN.
We met monthly at the Chamber of Commerce in 2024 and invited anyone interested in amateur radio. Topics presented included, Why Do Simplex? by Paul Wieloszynski K4PEW and WRMI Legends by Ted Randall about the shortwave international radio station history. Our club hosted the Upper Cumberland Neighborhood Amateur Radio Club 'Ham in a Day' training and testing program. At the same time, the ARES members competed in a Go Kit Challenge.
Club members have led workshops for local teens at The Spot, in Morse Code training and circuit board and soldering training.
Our club participated in the 'Be Radio Active' national Field Day event. Both new and vintage radios were activated and demonstrated to the public at the Farmers Market in South Carthage. We also participated in Wilson County HamQuest.
Our club has benefited from support and assistance by other area amateur radio clubs, Macon County, Wilson County and Upper Cumberland.
